Home With A View
A House with A View and much, much more. Christina Roughan of Roughan Interiors was asked by her client to create a comfortable yet sophisticated home where they could raise their 3 children. This 10,000 square foot custom built Georgian red brick 6 bedroom colonial is situated on Mead Point in Greenwich, CT. This private enclave was named after one of the original landowners who established Greenwich from the Native Americans in the 1800’s.

From the moment you enter the home you feel transported. Roughan is adept in juxtaposing custom made designs with comfort to create an inspiring and extremely liveable environment. The house had such amazing bones, and it was essential that the entry capture the essence of the family and their love of travel and art. It would be setting the tone for the rest of the journey throughout the home.

Roughan was able to extract their vision and create a story wall that caught your eye immediately. They went through their client's existing art collection, edited and added new selections that would intensify their story. Using Trowbridge photography was such an amazing collaboration. Louis Armstrong was perfect next to the client's Cuban black & white. The mix of oil, watercolour, photography creates an approachable vision that is very powerful and incredibly inviting. The curved wall was a challenge. It was all about geometry when laying it out as the curve projection had to be very specific to make it work correctly. We were emphatic about using our client’s personal photography such as the Cuban piece. It’s part of their heritage and is a beautiful photo and compliment to their lifestyle.

The home has a feeling as if it has been curated over time. There are lots of textures and warm hues utilized throughout the rooms. The wife’s favourite colour is blue, and it is woven throughout in subtle hues to enhance the proximity to the water and outdoor living. The dining room is subdued yet glamourous, with custom designed table and sideboard. It needed to work with the French doors that opened into the solarium. It is warm and inviting without being pretentious.

For the solarium, Roughan focused on seamlessly melding the indoors and outdoors while maintaining and enhancing the red brick Georgian revival architecture of the house. The subtle yet sophisticated materials and colour palette were selected for their versatility and ability to be a backdrop in all four seasons enabling the views to take centre stage. The space is a virtual outdoor painting that changes seasonally.

The bedrooms utilize lots of texture and warm hues of ivories, blues and greens. A chair and ottoman in the daughter’s bedroom give just the right pop of colour without dominating the space. Each room is tailored with details like trims that are reminiscent of a dressmaker’s detail. Grass cloths and silk wallpapers add just the right layer to give depth to the space especially the hallways.

Even the powder room had to be beautiful and elegant yet remained welcoming. For the space to flow seamlessly with the rest of the home, Chris utilized shades of blue as a foundation thus enabling it to have that timeless sophistication. To add depth and ground the space, millwork was added around the perimeter and painted a soft shade of Farrow & Ball and layered with a light blue, grey silk dupioni on the walls. The focal point of the powder room was the Roughan Interiors custom designed vanity which brings the contrast of light and dark together to create proportion and balance. The platinum mirror had to be tall to showcase the inset lighting and custom navy with Greek key window treatments. The heated floor was designed in a herringbone pattern mixed with Bardiglio blue and Calcutta gold. A shagreen and nickel side table with velvet cornice really adds understated drama along with the custom piece of art commissioned for the space. Roughan has truly created a dream family home this family can enjoy for decades to come.
