Henri Matisse 1869-1954 In a career that spanned 60 years artist Henri Matisse worked in all media from painting to sculpture and print making. Although his subjects were traditional—nudes, figures in landscapes, portraits, interior views—his revolutionary use of brilliant colour and exaggerated form to express emotion made him one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Born in December of 1869 in Le Cateau, France, he originally studied law and only turned to painting aged 21 when he was recovering from an operation. So taken by it that in 1891 moved to Paris to study art where he mainly painted still-life and landscapes in a traditional, academic style.
